Abstract

Angolan writer and filmmaker Ondjaki visited Indiana University in October 2009 and was interviewed by Black Camera's Michael Martin and Marissa Moorman. In the interview he discusses the current state of cinema in Angola, the relationship between writing and filmmaking in his creative work, and the themes that emerge in the documentary he codirected and coproduced with Kiluanje Liberdade. The documentary, Oxala Cresçam Pitangas / Hope the Pitanga Cherries Grow, looks at daily life in postwar Luanda through the experiences of some of the city's youth. It highlights the resilience and creativity with which young Angolans engage urban life.
