Front Cover: The cover of each issue of the Journal of the Malaysian Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society features a building or location that is a significant part of the national heritage of Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei.
The current issue shows the Sultan Azlan Shah Gallery in Kuala Kangsar, Perak. Construction of this building, formerly known as the Istana Ulu or the Istana Kota, began in 1898 and was completed in 1903. It is located at Bukit Changran, the site chosen by Sultan Idris ShahI (1849-1916) as the centre for the Sultanate. The design is attributed to Captain Maurice Alexander Cameron, who was Deputy Chief Engineer for the colonial administration, and shows influences drawn from Aceh and from South Asia. Restoration work on the structure began in 2001 at the urging of His Majesty Sultan Azlan Shah Muhibbuddin, and was finished in 2003.
