Juilliard Receives Leon Levy Foundation Grant of $233,000 for the digitization of its historic archival materials. The Juilliard School has received a grant of $233,000 from the Leon Levy Foundation for digitisation of its historic archival materials, including scrapbooks, production photos, and concert programmes. The two-year project grant will encompass the digitisation of sixty scrapbooks documenting the school’s history since its founding as the Institute of Musical Art in 1905, as well as more than 70,000 historic photos of dance, drama, and opera productions, and concert programmes. The digital materials will be displayed on Juilliard ResourceSpace (https://juilliard.resourcespace.com/pages/home.php), the school’s archive digital repository. Photography will be done by Ardon Bar Hama, who digitised the school’s Juilliard Manuscript Collection.

The Special Collections Research Center of Appalachian State University in Boone, NC has acquired the collection of guitar scholar and publisher, Matanya Ophee (1932–2017). Acquired through J & J Lubrano Music Antiquarians, this is one of the largest collections of nineteenth-century printed guitar music in existence and will be kept intact as the Matanya Ophee Collection. Highlights include over 500 first and early editions of all major guitar composers including Fernando Sor, Mauro Giuliani, Matteo Carcassi, Ferdinando Carulli, and many others, as well as the only complete manuscript of the Dix Etudes by Giulio Regondi (1822–1872), discovered by Ophee in 1987. The collection also includes the personal scores and papers of Argentinian guitarist, Doming Prat (1886–1944), as well as a large amount of rare music for the Russian seven-string guitar from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Dr Darius Kučinskas has edited the recently published volume, Ethnic Piano Rolls in the United States (Newcastle upon Tyne: Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2021). ‘Ethnic’ piano rolls are an important part of a still-neglected musical heritage. Having come to prominence in the first part of the twentieth century, they encapsulate the musical life of several continents and various ethnic communities based in the U.S. Focused only on the ‘foreign’ piano rolls issued in the United States, this book aims to fill in the gap of our knowledge in music recordings of immigrant communities mostly from Central and Eastern Europe. Four ethnic groups—Polish, Czech, Jewish, and Lithuanian—are presented in the book as separate chapters. Each chapter is followed by a list of piano rolls, assembled and published for the first time. Authors include Dr Mike Kukral (Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, Terre Haute, IN), Karolina Skalska (National Institute of Music and Dance, Warsaw, Poland), Bob Berkman (Buffalo, NY), and Dr Darius Kučinskas (Kaunas University of Technology, Lithuania).
