Abstract

Abstract:

In the process of compiling copies of all items regarding Herman Melville and his family covering the years 1848 through 1891 in weekly newspapers published in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, I faced some research obstacles. I was able to resolve most format and location issues, but the location of missing issues of the Berkshire County Eagle became highly problematic. The dates of missing issues are provided in case any can be located by scholars and Melville enthusiasts. This essay presents newly discovered items for the first time. Highlighted in these findings are a rare printed reference to Melville’s lost novel, a complimentary review of Pierre, and a critique of Jay Leyda’s research.
