"Monsters" is a place-based creative nonfiction essay that follows a rural Iowa family for a year in the early 1970s as they struggle to respond to the domestic strife incurred by the challenges of one parent's repressed homosexuality and eventual infidelity. These challenges are mirrored by a year of particularly violent Midwest tornadoes.
