Abstract

Abstract:

In an original and highly instructive approach to reading post-9/11 political developments through the lens of tragedy–both as a genre and as a category of human understanding–Wallace uses plays from Aeschylus to Shakespeare to illustrate the timelessness of the "tragic" mode. Highlighting such diverse issues as terrorism, revenge, surveillance, refugees, and climate change, the author offers a broad literary and historical perspective on contemporary events.
