This Spanish language program series targets secondary students, ACTFL Novice to Intermediate levels, preparing them to meet the global challenges of multicultural Spanish speaking communities by addressing language learning through the lens of interculturality, that is, "the interaction of people from different cultural backgrounds, using authentic language appropriately [End Page 474] in a way that demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the cultures" (xiv). The language program materials focus on engaging adolescent students via the investigation, explanation, and reflection of cultural practices and products of Spanish-speaking cultures, so that by identifying and comparing cultural beliefs and values, students can gain an understanding of various cultural perspectives of Spanish-speakers, thereby developing respect, empathy and tolerance, and thus leading to an acquisition of cultural, as well as linguistic, competency. By engaging in global problem-solving issues, the program's imaginative and integrative technology, such as interactions with native speakers of age-similar peers via video blogs, interviews, blogs, podcasts, and social media messages, facilitates this goal. Also, the program recognizes the importance of engaging heritage language learners of Spanish communities in the United States, including strategies and resources to meet their needs as well, both in and outside of the classroom.

At each level, the program's integrated technology contains a variety of online instructor and student resources, including a FlexText, a digital version of the teacher and student editions, with links to other media resources, including diccionarios such as the DLE (previously known as DRAE), online assessment tools, additional online vocabulary, grammar, communication and cultural activities, including Mi progreso comunicativo/Mi progreso intercultural, which is a set of "I can" statements that students can reflect upon and check off ("This is still a goal" or "I can do this with help" or "I can...
