Abstract :
Ashley Thorpe’s Performing China on the London Stage makes an important contribution to the scholarship on theatre history, Chinese opera, Sino-British contacts, orientalism, and intercultural performance. His engaging of orientalist discourse and hybridity in critical analysis is especially noteworthy and thought-provoking. The book opens up new territory for the understanding of modern and contemporary Chinese opera performances in Britain.
