Abstract

This paper presents the point of view of an archaeologist who has to juggle with, on the one hand, artistic and financial demands made on ancient theatrical sites, and on the other, the need to conserve sites and protect them from over-use. The author explains the functions and limits of the Greek Archaeological Service, and outlines the complexities of the problems it has to face. She provides examples of both successful and disastrous management of certain sites.
