Personalia 2015

The basis for our listings and presentation depends on participating departments. Personalia remains the most comprehensive attempt to keep track of our colleagues and frame trends within the profession in the U.S. and Canada. But this attempt is only possible through the cooperation of faculty and staff at the departments in both countries. As in years past, we insist on caution in interpreting the statistics presented here. We speculate that with a higher percentage of responding departments from year to year, we might see a steadier trend in the numbers of our profession.

The statistical summary includes only those departments listed in the preceding Personalia section that sent in statistics before we went to press, i.e., all departments except the asterisked ones. Not all departments submitted enrollment figures. We count asterisked departments only in the total number of departments (). Departments that have no active faculty members are removed from the listing of individual departments, although there were no such cases this year.
