Abstract

Heat as energy can be used manually, mechanically and electronically to image. An eight-part exercise in the manual and mechanical use of heat to image and a five-part exercise in electronic heat imaging are presented. Some parts of the exercises require nothing more than an ordinary match and plain paper; others require thermal copy paper of any variety. Exercises done by machine can be varied with any thermal copier. These experimental exercises are offered primarily to stimulate thinking about heat as a way of imaging. Exploration of the energies underlying technology takes much of the mystery out of seemingly magical, complex tools and makes them accessible and enjoyable.
