C D C O M P A N I O N Contributors' Notes SELF-PORTRAIT Leon Biriotti, P.O. Box 10919, Montevideo, Uruguay. Perhaps all artists, regardless of the genre or medium in which they work, wish at some moment in their lives to make a self-portrait. Visual artists may have the advantage over others in terms of producing images of the self. But is not every creative work a fragment from a portrait of the artist's soul? Each realization is a different portrayal of the self, leading eventually to the day the painter creates a selfportrait or the writer completes an autobiography . .. and the others? The moment arrived in my life at which I felt the necessity of creating a self-portrait. Obviously, no one could help me do this, and because I could not paint, draw or sculpt, my al­ ternative was to use the only expressive means natural to me. This composition, however, is a self-portrait only because I am calling it one. In doing so, I am asserting a contradic­ tion, pretending to achieve something as concrete as a selfportrait through the only art form that is, in essence, absolutely abstract: music. But since I myself claim that this is a self-portrait, how can my audience not believe me? I am not waiting to be "recognized" in this composition, but I am using a procedure that could be called "reflection" or "imaging" (which should not be confused with the cancrizans or retrograde techniques typical of serialism). In this case the object and its image are similar but different, since I am the subject, and the image is the way I see my­ self—which is different from the image that others may see. The first part of this work presents the subject; the second superimposes a reflected image over a repetition of this pre­ sentation. To produce the first part of the work, my live per­ formance on the oboe was recorded as it was being simultaneously processed by several electronic devices. The second part is an immediate playback of the first recording juxtaposed with my continued live performance, which is transformed through subtly different electronic processes that respond to the original recording with variations, imita­ tions and derivations. Leon Biriotti, an oboist and composer dedicated to new music, was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, in 1929. He has beenfirstoboist and conductor ofsymphonic and chamber orchestras as well as a member ofdifferent chamber groups in Montevideo. Biriotti was awardedfellowships by Centre Latinoamericano de Altos Estudios Musicales (Institute TorcuatoDi Telia, Buenos Aires 1969-1970) and Internazionales Musikinstitut Darmstadt (1976). He has participated as both a sohist and a composer in various internationalfestivals and symposiums such as New Music America and the Subtropics Music Festival in the United States; Fes­ tival Musica Nova and Festival de Inverno in Brazil; Aspekte Festi­ val in Austria; Trimalca and the third Encuentro de Musica Contemporanea in Chile; Por la Musica en las Americas and Encuentro Latinoamericano de Compositores in Argentina; the first Encuentro Latinoamericano de Musica in Mexico, the SpringFesti­ val in Prague; the fifth Festival Latinoamericano de Musica in Venezuela; and The Americas—London in England. Several com­ posers have written works dedicated to Biriotti, including Mastrogiovanni, Tosar, Fourchotte, Pinto Fonseca, Grela, Rivero, Legrand, Ribeiro, Peixinho, Barletta, Orrego-Salas, Iturriberry and Pellegrino. CYCLONE Jose Augusto Mannis, Rua Vitoriano dos Anjos, 507, Ap. 53, 13035-590 Campinas, Säo Paulo, Brazil. Cyclone belongs to a language of electroacoustic music in which what counts, finally, is the gesture of the sound. The movement of the composition is lively, vigorous and ener­ getic, creating clear musical articulations. The title is an accurate reflection of the style of the work. It also describes the way I manipulated the sound material to create the work, wrapping it around the turbulences that the material itself caused and created. Jose Augusto Mannis was born in Säo Paulo, Brazil, in 1958. He studied with Conrado Silva, Luis Roberto Oliveira, Michel Phüippot, Philippe Manoury and Guy Reibel.
