  • Newman vs. the Anti-Defamation League

Fred Newman and the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) have gone head-to-head several times over the years, primarily in the 1980s and early 1990s when Newman was heavily involved with the New Alliance Party (NAP). The ADL currently has an article on their website <www.adl.org> that accuses Newman and Lenora Fulani-NAP's two-time presidential candidate-of everything from anti-Semitism to campaign fund embezzlement. Here is Newman's response to the accusations.

Claims of anti-Semitism:

"I think they're all political. And people have a right to be political as I have a right to be political. I'm not an anti-Semite. I'm a Jew and moreover I work with a lot of Jews. And [Lenora] Fulani-the notion of Fulani as an anti-Semite, given the fact that she's done more work, in my opinion, than any Black leader on the question of Black-Jewish relationships. That catch-22 is unbelievable. But it's political. It's motivated politically" (Newman 2002).

Claims of Embezzlement:

"We have been scrutinized by government authorities as much or more than any group in the country. If there was that, I'd be in jail" (Newman 2002).
