Students benefit from a combined emphasis in general education on interdisciplinarity, civic responsibility, service learning, and writing. As exemplified in a course on Epidemics and AIDS, they can gain much-needed practice not only by confronting the multiple, interlocking dimensions of public issues but by adding a public voice.
