Opening a window on a small department in a medium-sized comprehensive Catholic university, this essay describes how the Marywood English department has wrestled with the challenges of a changing institutional culture, one that has moved from an emphasis on teaching and service to one focused on teaching and publication. The department’s response has been a rededication to its longstanding commitment to quality instruction and service.
