Gale Dissertation Research Fellowship in Nineteenth-Century Media

We are pleased to announce that the winner of the 2012 Gale Dissertation Research Fellowship in Nineteenth-Century Media is Helena Goodwyn, for her dissertation, “The Americanisation of W. T. Stead.” Goodwyn is a PhD candidate at Queen Mary, University of London; she holds an MA in English from Kings College, London, and a BA from the University of Leeds.

The Gale Dissertation Research Fellowship in Nineteenth-Century Media is awarded in support of dissertation research that will make the most substantial and innovative use of full-text digitized collections of nineteenth-century magazines and newspapers. The fellowship is made possible by the generosity of Gale, part of Cengage Learning.

Winners of the fellowship receive a prize of $1,500 and one year’s subscription to selected digital collections from Gale, including 19th Century UK Periodicals and 19th Century British Library Newspapers. The deadline for the 2013 fellowship competition is October 15. A call for submissions will be announced later this year. [End Page 287]

Colby Book Prize

We are delighted to announce two co-winners of the Robert and Vineta Colby Scholarly Book Prize for 2012: Aileen Fyfe, for Steam-Powered Knowledge: William Chambers and the Business of Publishing, 1820– 1860 (Chicago), and Robert Patten, for Charles Dickens and “Boz”: The Birth of the Industrial Age Author (Cambridge). The committee warmly congratulates this year’s winners for their exemplary scholarship.

Among the nominated books this year, we also recognize three semi-finalists given in alphabetical order: Katherine Haskins, The Art-Journal and Fine Art Publishing in Victorian England, 1850–1880 (Ashgate), Kristine Moruzi, Constructing Girlhood through the Periodical Press, 1850–1915 (Ashgate), and Jim Mussell, The Nineteenth Century Press in the Digital Age (Palgrave Macmillan).

The Colby Prize honors the book-length work of original scholarship published during the preceding year that has made the most significant contribution to the study of the nineteenth-century British newspaper or periodical press. For further details, please see http://www.rs4vp.org/prizes.html.

Curran Fellowship for Research on the Victorian Press

The Curran Fellowship is made possible through the generosity of pioneering scholar Eileen Curran. Two grants of $2,500 are awarded annually. These awards are intended to aid scholars studying nineteenth-century British magazines and newspapers in making use of primary print and archival sources. The projected research may involve study of the periodical press in any of its manifold forms and may range from within Britain itself to the many countries within and outside of the empire where British magazines and newspapers were bought, sold, and read during the long nineteenth century (ca. 1780–1914).

The deadline for the sixth annual Curran Fellowship competition for research to be undertaken in 2014 is October 15, 2013. Applications for the Curran Fellowship must be submitted in electronic form and sent to curranfellowship@rs4vp.org. Applicants should send a CV, the names and contact information of two scholars who are familiar with the applicant and his or her research goals, and a description of the project to which these funds would be applied. Applicants will be notified by January 15, 2014. Successful applicants will be required to submit a brief report describing the results of their research to RSVP at the conclusion of the funded portion of their project and are asked to acknowledge the fellowship in any published work based on that research.
