September 2002 » Historically Speaking39 ACHIEVEMENTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS DonaldM.Bishop,counselorforpublicaffairsattheAmericanEmbassyinAbuja, Nigeria, gave the 2002 Exceptional Guest Lecture in History atthe University ofIbadan, "AHistorian in Public Service: ALook Back, ALookAhead." Following the lecture, the faculty lightheartedly bestowed upon the lecturer two titles, "The Don ofHistory" and"The BishopofPolitical Science." John C. Burnham onJuly 1, 2003, will takeup apositionas scholarinresidence at dieOhio State University Medical Heritage Center. Hewill continue in an adjunct relationship with two departments, as research professor ofhistory andasprofessorofpsychiatry. Duringthe academic year2002-2003, hewill be a fellow in Robinson College, University ofCambridge. Elena S. Danielson has been appointed associate directorofthe Hoover Institution and director ofthe Hoover Library and Archives, effective January 1, 2002. Danielsonjoined die Hoover Institution in 1978 and has served in positions ofincreasing responsibility since then. In 1981, she was named an assistant archivist, was promoted to associate archivist in 1988, and was named archivist in 1997. She also serves as curator ofthe Institution's West European collection. Danielson has written for a number ofacademic and archival publications, such as American Archivist, and she has presented information at conferences in Bulgaria, Poland, Romania, and Russia. She is a regular contributor to the Hoover Digest. Before her Hoover appointment , Danielson heldteachingpositions at SantaClaraUniversityand Stanford University. Danielson holds a Ph.D. and an A.M. degree in German studies from Stanford, a master's degree in library science, and an undergraduate degree from the University ofCalifornia, Berkeley. Richard W. Etulain was honored by die University ofNew Mexico, which established a Richard W. Etulain Lectureship in die History and Cultures of die American West to honor Professor Etulain's work in western history at die University ofNew Mexico. Marsha and Linda Frey received a Batten fellowship from the International Center for Jefferson Studies. John Derrick Fowler has accepted a tenure-track position as assistant professor ofhistory at Kennesaw State University in Georgia beginning in August. He will teach me Civil War and Reconstruction. Rev. James F. Garneau was recently named die book review editor for the Josephinum Journal ofTheology. Steven C. Harper was recently named assistant professorofchurch history and doctrine at Brigham Young University. Miriam Levin was on leave in France during the spring semester of2001 as invited professor at the University Blaise Pascal. She has also been invited to be the Maria Goeppert Mayer Visiting Professor at the University ofGöttingen. She co-organized an NSF fundedworkshop at the Massachusetts Institute ofTechnology in March on "Reconsidering Technology in the Aftermath ofSeptember 1 1Ui." Nickolas Lupinin was the co-organizerofa conference on the History ofthe Russian Orthodox Church held at Harvard University March 22-23, 2002 (sponsored by die Davis Center for Russian Studies at Harvard). Professor Lupinin also co-chaired the conference and presented "The Tradition ofElders (Startsy) indie Russian Church." ProfessorLupinin teaches Russian and European history at Franklin Pierce College and is an associate of die Davis Center for Russian Studies at Harvard University. John Morello has received a Travel to Collections Grant from Duke University to visit the Hartman Library on Advertising to do research. TerryNetos, PhD. candidate, KentStateUniversity,departmentofhistory,joined die U.S. DepartmentofState as a foreign service officerin March 2002. GrahamAlexander Peck has accepted a tenure-track position inAmerican history and EastAsian history at St. Xavier University ofChicago. Steven P. Remy was postdoctoral fellow in international security at the Mershon Center ofdie Ohio State University in 2001-2002. In September 2002, he willjoin die history department ofBrooklyn College ofthe City University ofNew York as an assistant professor. Jonathan Rose's book The IntellectualLife ofthe British Working Classes (Yale University Press, 2001) won me Longman-History Today Prize for die best history book of2001. It was also shortlisted for the DuffCooper Award, and the Economistmagazine ranked it "one ofthe bestbooks ofthe year." It has also won the Jacques Barzun Prize in Cultural History, the SHARP Book History prize, and die New Jersey Council for the Humanities Book Ward. It was also longlisted for die Samuel Johnson Prize. Robert S.
