Acknowledgements The substance of this book came from lectures I gave over the years in my own classes and at conferences. Among the many people to thank, therefore, are my students in the Economic History of Modern China course which I gave in the 1980s, who were much confused by my stubborn reluctance to accept the standard published wisdoms of the day which was only matched by my inability to come up with an alternative. However, I must thank Professors Hsu Hung and Choi Chi-cheung for providing the occasion in 1993 to make me summarize my ideas for a series of lectures at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). Comments also came from readers of the booklet that was produced by the Division of Humanities at HKUST from those lectures. Professor Raj Brown included Chapter 4 into her, ed.
