1 1 CHINESE INDONESIANS IN AN ERA OF GLOBALIZATION: SOME MAJOR CHARACTERISTICS Leo Suryadinata IndonesiaisthelargestcountryinSoutheastAsia,andtheabsolutenumber ofIndonesianChinesewasbelievedtobethelargestintheregion;thatis, betweenthreeandfivepercent.Recentstudiesbasedonthecensusshow thatthenumberisnotaslargeaspreviouslyestimated(between1.5and 2percent),butitisstilllargeenoughforthemtoplayasignificantrolein variousfields,especiallyintheeconomic,social,andculturalfields,ifnot inthepoliticalfield. Duetopoliticalandeconomicreasons,theChineseinIndonesiabecame thetargetofmobviolenceinMay1998,whenanti-Chineseriotswere rampantwithlooting,raping,andkillingtakingplace.ThisMaytragedy shockedtheworld.However,withthefallofSoeharto,theconditionsofthe ChineseinIndonesiahavevastlyimproved,andmanyareoftheviewthat theyneverenjoyedsuchapositionintheIndonesianrecenthistory.What aretherealpositionandconditionsoftheethnicChineseinIndonesia? AsIseeit,theChineseinIndonesiahavethefollowingmajorcharacteristics. Heterogeneity of the Ethnic Chinese in Indonesia ChineseIndonesiansarenotahomogeneousgroup.Theyaredividedby culture, political orientations, economic background, and citizenship. 01Ethnicn.indd1 9/23/082:41:00PM 2 Leo Suryadinata Culturally,theChineseweredividedinthepastintolocallyborn,Indonesianspeaking peranakansandforeignbornChinese-speakingtotoks.Butnowadays theabsolutemajorityiseitherperanakansorperanakanizedtotoks.Interms ofreligion,someareeitherBuddhists,Confucians,orthefollowersofa mixtureofBuddhism,Taoism,andConfucianism;someareChristians,and othersareMuslims.Politically,theyaredividedintopro-Jakarta,pro-Beijing andpro-Taipei,butthemajorityispro-Jakarta.Economically,theyarealso dividedintoupperclass,middleclass,andthelowerclass,anditappears thatthemiddleclassformsthemajority.Intermsofcitizenship,theyare dividedintoIndonesiancitizensandforeigners,withthemajorityholding Indonesiancitizenship. Despite the heterogeneous nature of the Chinese community, the Indonesianauthoritiesinthepast,ifnotnow,consideredthemahomogeneous group.TheyregardedtheethnicChinesetobeloyaltoChina(especially Beijing),nottoJakarta.TheyconsideredtheChinesea“foreignminority”who shouldbecomepartoftheindigenouspopulationthroughtotalassimilation. ThisisparticularlythecaseduringSoeharto’srule. LEGACY OF THE SOEHARTO ERA Soeharto’sAssimilationPolicy:Thethirty-twoyearsofSoehartorulehashad amajorimpactontheChineseinIndonesia.ThethreepillarsofChinese culturewereeradicated:Chineseschoolswerecloseddown,Chinesemass mediawerebanned,andethnicChineseorganizationsweredissolved.In addition,thename-changingpolicywasintroduced.ChineseIndonesianswere advisedtochangetheirnamesintoIndonesiannames.WhatisanIndonesian name?Anythingaslongasitisnon-Chinese. IndigenousIndonesiannation:DuringtheSoehartoera,theethnic ChinesewereexpectedtobeabsorbedintoanIndonesiannation,defined bythegovernmentasthepribumi(indigenes)-basednation.Tobecome membersofthis“indigenousnation”,theChineseIndonesianswereexpected toabandontheir“Chinese-ness”.Toalargeextent,alargenumberofChinese IndonesianshavebeenIndonesianized,ifnotindigenized.Putdifferently, manytotokChinese,especiallytheirchildren,havebeenperanakanized,while peranakanChinesehavebeenfurtherIndonesianized.
