325 Bibliography I. Bibliographical Note This Bibliography includes only the materials cited in the notes or the text. I do not adopt the traditional criteria of “primary” and “secondary” sources, for they are relative terms. Rather, I divide the sources into two categories: basic and monographic. In either case, all sources are interfiled, without regard to their language. The basic category comprises three subdivisions. • In the first subdivision are archival sources, such as Manchu archives , confidential memorials, and their translations, if any. • The second subdivision consists of veritable records (shilu), dynastic histories—including Tan Qian’s Guoque—official publications, local histories, and personal accounts of the Ming and Qing periods. • The last group contains official and private genealogies, most of which pertain to Manchu and Chinese bannermen’s families or clans. In the monographical category are books, articles, and others, such as conference papers and news reports. They cover various subjects relative to the Jurchens, Manchus, and the Qing dynasty, representing the results of international scholarship. For the sake of convenience they are listed alphabetically, without divisions. In the Bibliography, Chinese, Korean, and Japanese sources are not translated into English, for they are provided with appropriate characters , which scholars and advanced students in the field of Asian studies will understand. German sources are rendered into English, however. Manchu materials are also translated into English unless they are accompanied with Chinese titles or Chinese editions. A great number of the sources are arranged by authors or compilers . Most archival materials, local histories, government publications, 326 Bibliography books known usually by their titles, and those whose authors or compilers cannot be identified, are listed by title. Sources referred to in the abbreviated form in the notes appear in the Bibliography as cited, followed by the titles in full. Since some Chinese authors romanize their names using different practices, the Bibliography follows their original forms instead of the pin-yin system. Because the Manchus are always mentioned only by given names, I cite their works the same way, such as Orong’an instead of Silin Gioro Orgong’an, unless their clan names appear on the title page. If a source consists of two or more volumes, the number of volumes is indicated at the end of the entry. The word “volume” stands for 冊 in Chinese. II. Basic Sources 1.
