Foreword Photographs and Roadrunners A smygrandparentswereapttosay,“Texasisasbigas aNumber4washtub.”Thatis,theydon’tcomeanybigger. Andgreatnessofphysicalscaleandsizejustintuitively translatedintoamplitudeinallmannerofdirections— fromthetypicalbraggadociooflandareaandtotallength ofborderstodimensionslikemultipleculturesandcapitalistic diversitythatmostnativeTexanswholovetheirstatejustnaturally takeforgranted. EvenwhenAlaskapoppedintotheunionin1959andtoo manynon-Texansthoughtitwouldputusinourplace,wedid notsecedeordemandarecountintheUSCongress.Always rememberthatTexansareAmericansfirst andjustasPriceDaniel becamethefirstUnited tatesgovernortoofficia lywelcome Alaskansintotheunion,weallexcitedlycelebratedthenew wealthofpeopleandlandsinournation.Texansacceptedthis neweststateeitherwithtypicalhumor—“Hell,justwaituntilall thaticemelts!”—orasastimulustobethebestandbiggestin myriadwaysbeyondmeregeographicalsize.That’sthewaywe alwaysacceptchallenge—alwayshaveandalwayswill. ThemanwhoputitbestwasTexas’sgreatestsage,J.Frank Dobie,whenhewrote:“Ifpeoplearetoenjoytheirownlivesthey mustbeawareofthesignifi anceoftheirownenvironment.The mosquitois,objectively,asgoodandasbeautifulastheGreek Acanthus.…WeintheSouthwestshallbecivilizedwhenthe roadrunneraswellasthenightingalehasconnotations.” Thenuancesofsuchroadrunnerconnotationsmatterdeeply. Inpointoffact,thepridethatonetakesinone’sstateisonlyin partderivedfromthesocialcontractthatevolvesaroundliving therein.Equallyimportantareavarietyofotherfactorsranging fromplaceofbirth,familyheritage,theculturaltraditionsofany particularsocialregionalism,andevenattimessuchvariables asfood,geography,art,folklore,education,economy,sports, religion,or,well,younameit.Traveltoanyotherstateinthe unionmakesthisplainlyobvious,andthespreadoftheinformation revolutiononlyservestomultiplythisreinforcement everyday. Soitshouldcomeasnosurpriseinthisdayandagethat regionalismhascometoplayaseriousroleinthecontinuinginflu enceofphotographythroughallthemedia.Andnotsurprisingly, thecontinuingriseininterestandinfluenceof Texasphotography advancesandexpandswitheachgeneration. UnderstandfromtheoutsetthatTexasclaimsnoprimacyin thisrespect.Regionalstudiesintothemedium/artformofphotography havebeenwithusforoveracenturynowinvariousother states.Certainothergeographicalregionshavewitnessedthis boom,anditisbothpertinentandcriticaltociteinparticularthe magnificenteffo tsofsuchpioneeringphotohistoriansasPeter PalmquistinCaliforniaandtheAmericanWest,andRichard RudisillintheSouthwesternUnitedStates.Anditisimportantto honortheseriousadvocacyandpersonalcommitmentthatboth theseindividuals,amongothers,havebroughttobearuponthe studyofphotographyanditshistorytoscholars,researchers,collectors ,andhistorians—bothprofessionalandamateur—throughout theentirenation. Infact,theimportanceofregionalphotohistorieshasalsobeen embracedinternationally.AsoneofourfinestEu opeanhistorians ,StephenJoseph,hasstateditsowell: Allapproachesareequallyvalid,providedthehistorianadheresto thefundamentalprincipleofrespectingtheprimarysources.In fact,theexpansionofknowledgeinthehistoryofphotographyhas beensuchinthe1970sand1980sthattherehasinevitablybeena breakingdownofpre-existingschemasorpresentations.[Photo historiesbyHelmut]Gernsheimand[Beaumont]Newhall,while stillthestandardworks,havecomeunderassaultforparochialism, biasorslackness.Inthissituation,nosingleapproachisuniversally valid;nonehasthemonopolyontruth;allhavetheirparttoplay. InthisrespectTexashasnotbeennegligent.Indeed,asLarry Jonespointsoutsowellinhissuperbintroductiontothishandsome volume,ourstatehasbeenrewardedbythepioneering effortsofmanynotablehistorians,fromthelegendaryWalter PrescottWebbthroughtothoseofourpresentgenerationsuch asDavidHaynes,MarkMillerMorris,andW.RussellYoung. They,aswellasmanyothers,whohailfromplacesrangingfrom largecitiestosmallregionalhistoricalcenters,havelabored...
