lArge-FormAt mounted PhotogrAPhs t hisphotographwastakenthesameyearastheTexasLand andCopperAssociationExpedition.Itisquitepossiblethat thephotographeronthatexpedition,A.C.Troutman,took thisphotographofapartoftheTonkawaIndianvillageadjacent toFortGriffin ThevillagewaslocatedinthevalleybelowFort AlbumenPrint(6½x9inches)byUnknownArtist,FortGriffin Texas,ca.1872 Tonkawa Indian village at Fort Griffin JonesCollection,DeGolyerLibrary,SMU Griffininana eaknownas“theFlat.”Thefemaleonhorseback attheleftgripsaparasoltohelpshieldherfromthesun.Theman onhorsebackattherightcarriestipipoles.Thewarriorandarmy scoutstandingnexttothechildholdsacarbineandwearsaUS Armyuniformjacket.Thecircularobjectswornbythismanare •PhotographsfromtheLawrenceT.JonesIIICollection• •132• hairplates.HairplateswereGermansilverdiscs,slightlyconcave, thatwereattachedinaseriesofgraduatedsizestoaleatherstrap whichhungfromthebackofthehead.Whenonhorsebackand ridingfast,thelightweighthairplateswouldfanoutbehindthe rider’sheadandflutterinthewind TheTonkawamanseenhere pulledsomeofhishairplatesfromhisbacksideanddisplayed abouthalfofthemforthecameraman. J .A.Caldwell,atravelingphotographerbasedoutofHenrietta ,Texas,capturedthissceneoffi ecowboysatworkbranding cattleinalogcorral.Whileonesteerisbeingbranded,a cowboywithalariatisseekingthenextonetobebranded.The manattheleftisnotchingtheearofalltheanimalstofurther helpidentifythemwhenroundeduplater.Itisunknownexactly whereCaldwellwaswhenhetookthisphotograph,andthescene appearstobecandidratherthanstagedorposed.Arough-hewn logbunkhousecanbeseenbehindthecorral.
