335 Thomas J. Noel is professor of history at the University of Colorado Denver, where he is the director of Public History, Preservation, and Colorado Studies and codirector of the Center for Colorado and the West. He is the author or coauthor of many books on Colorado, including Denver: Mining Camp to Metropolis, Guide to Colorado Historic Places, and Historical Atlas of Colorado. Tom writes a Sunday history column for The Denver Post and appears on Channel 9 (NBC in Denver) as Dr. Colorado. DuaNe a. smiTh, professor of history at Fort Lewis College in Durango, is the author or coauthor of numerous books on Colorado and the West, including The Trail of Gold and Silver: Mining in Colorado, 1859–2009, and Colorado: A History in Photographs. Duane has taught Colorado history at Fort Lewis College since 1964. He also writes a monthly history column for The Durango Herald and serves as chair of the Durango Parks and Forestry Board and the Animas School House Museum Board. Both scholars completed their master’s and doctorate degrees in history at the University of Colorado Boulder. Both have chaired their town’s historic preservation commissions and have been sheriff of their town’s Westerners’ Posses.
