Eric S. Thompson author recently inspected this stela in the regional museum in Campeche, and convinced himself that there never had been a third dot (Fig. 79.1d). Stela 18, Etzna, records an Initial Series of 9.12.0.0.0 10 Ahau. There follows the Lunar Series, recording a moon age of 25 days, 5 moons. C1 is Glyph B of the Lunar Series; Dl should be Glyph A, but is not identifiable as such. C2 has a coefficient of 7. The glyph itself consists of a weathered element with a recognizable kin tail beneath, and a superfix which has the outline of that of Yax. The inner circle is recognizable. There can, we think, be little doubt that the whole represents 7 Yaxkin. This is the position where one would expect to find the month sign (the second glyph after Glyph B of the Lunar Series) in view of the fact that it is not placed after the day sign. Moreover, the tail and what can be seen of the superfix indicate, that the whole is the month sign Yaxkin. The whole, therefore reads: 9.12.0.0.0 10 Ahau 7 Yaxkin, whereas one would normally expect 9.12.0.0.0 10 Ahau 8 Yaxkin (Fig. 79.1b) Stela 19, Etzna, has an Initial Series, the opening glyphs of which are absent. However, the surface of the top left corner of the stele is rough, and it is probable that a piece of the original surface, carrying the missing glyphs, has flaked off. A1, B1, and A2 record 0 uinals, 0 kins, 8 Ahau. A3 is occupied by Glyph G9 and what is probably Glyph F. There follows a record of a moon age of 21 days, 6 moons. Glyph B2, which follows 10 Ahau, has a coefficient of 7. The junior author studied the rather worn It has been known for very many years that the positions in the months held by each day were one less in Yucatan at the time of the Spanish conquest than they had been in the cities of the Central area during the Classic or Initial Series Period. That is to say, combinations such as 12 Kan 1 Pop, 6 Imix 3 Yax, or 13 Ahau 17 Mol were used at that time in Yucatan, whereas in the Central area during the Classic Period those dates would normally have been written 12 Kan 2 Pop, 6 Imix 4 Tax, and 13 Ahau 18 Mol. It has been generally supposed that the backward shift of one place in month positions was a late innovation, not long antedating the Spanish conquest , and perhaps connected in some way with the Mexican domination of much of the Maya area. We believe that this shift occurred at a quite early date in Campeche and, perhaps, elsewhere, and that it is characteristic of the Puuc area. Across the top of the front of Stela 9, Etzna, there are seven glyphs. The first two record quite clearly 9 Ahau 17 Mol. The next sign is the head of an animal, perhaps with the Chicchan ornament on its forehead, and, therefore, conceivably with the numerical value of 9 or 19. Glyph 4 is a katun sign. There follows next a hand with a bracket prefix. The best interpretation of this part of the text can be made by assuming that the head represents the number 19. The whole would then read: (9.19.0.0.0) 9 Ahau 17 Mol, 19 (?) katuns completed. Whether that reading be acceptable , or not, there can be no doubt that the two opening glyphs record 9 Ahau 17 Mol, whereas one would normally expect 9 Ahau 18 Mol.
