C H P T E R 3 Flee for ll BY ERLY JNURY in 1975, the news coming acrossmyfather’sfour-bandradiowasnotgood.Despiteacease- fi rethathadbeensignedinParistwoyearsearlier,theNorth VietnameseArmy(NVA)launchedamajoroffensiveonJanuary 6,capturingPhuocLongCityandthesurroundingprovince. OnMarch1,anevenmorepowerfuloffensivewasunleashed ontheCentralHighlandsofSouthVietnam,resultinginnearly sixtythousandtroopsdead,injured,ormissing.ByMarch 25,1975,Hue,thethirdlargestcityinSouthVietnam,andthe QuangTriprovincehadfallentotheCommunistregime.Itwas cleartoeveryonethattheoutcomeofthiswarwasnolongerin question.SouthVietnamwouldsoonfall,andallthefreedoms wehadenjoyedwouldceasetoexist. Myfatherwaswellawareofthisfact,andhehadbegunserious preparationsforafamilyescapeplanearlyin1975.Butitwas essentialforhimtobeextremelycautiousinmakinghisplans andevenmoreguardedinwhomhetrusted.SouthVietnamwas Flee for ll ✮ 37 filledwithspieswhowouldquicklyandwillinglyprovideinformation —escapeplans,militaryinitiatives,trooplocations,and thepoliticalpreferencesoftheresidents—totheenemytogain favorwiththeNVA.AstheNVAandVietcongmovedfarther andfarthersouth,thesetraitorswereresponsibleforthebrutal slayingsofthousandsofinnocentmen,women,andchildren. Witheachvillageandtownthatfell,theNVAwouldquickly determinewhichresidentsfellintothecategoryof“Traitorto thePeople’sCause.”IfyouhadservedintheSouthVietnamese Army,aideditssoldiers,spokenoutagainsttheNVA,plannedto escapethecountry,oranythingelsedeemedtobedetrimentalto theCommunistmovement,youandyourfamilyweresubjectto severepublicbeatings,imprisonment,torture,orevensummary execution.Quiteoften,allittooktobeprovenguiltyofsuch “crimes”wastheaccusationofasnitch. So,myfatherwentabouthisevacuationplansinasmuch secrecyaspossible.Inadditiontofollowingtheprogressofthe waronhisradio,heheardthestoriesoftheunmercifulNVA slayingsfromhundredsofSouthVietnameserefugeeswhohad beendrivenoutoftheirhomesasthewarfrontmovedsouth. ByAprilof1975,theonce-quiet,relativelysmallcommunityof BenDawasoverflowingwithhomelessvictimsofthewar.The smallCatholicchurchinBenDaservedastheinitialshelterfor therefugees,andoncethechurchfilledtoitscapacity,themigrating massescampedoutsidethechurch,inthestreets,and whereverelsetheycouldfind.InearlyApril,BenDahadturned intoatentcityofsortsastheNVAhadtakencontroloftwelve provincesandmorethaneightmillionpeople.Finally,onApril28, 1975,thewarthatonceseemedsofarawayfrommysiblingsarrived onourbackporch. Itwastimetoputmyfather’splansintoaction.Mysiblings wenttobedthateveningjustastheyhaddoneonvirtuallyevery othernightoftheirlives—withfewfears,concerns,orworries.
