Three rosters of the Texas Volunteer Guard that carry Armstrong’s name are known. The earliest is dated April 3, 1889, at Brownsville and is entitled “Muster Roll of Company G First Regiment Texas Volunteer Guard.” This shows Armstrong mustering in as a private on April 3, 1889, his occupation given as “Stockman.” He is shown to be thirty-eight years old, with blue eyes, light-colored hair, and a fair complexion.
