# C H A P T E R 32 Large Cylindrical Necks Berta Lledó Illustrated by Berta Lledó Thirty-three cylindrical necks of large diameter, usually greater than 6.5 cm, with simple or thickened rims are cataloged separately because no complete vessel in the Serçe Liman ı cullet has such a neck (Fig. 32-1). Jar necks that bear the closest resemblance, for example, are shorter and usually more flared or folded. Nevertheless, these cylindrical necks probably belonged to storage vessels, based on their large size and their poor to fair glass quality. No shoulder curve is preserved . Only a few examples have been illustrated to give the reader an idea of the variation in shape. Although smaller, a neck from medieval Beirut bears a close resemblance. There are many fragments of cylindrical rims, but only those 33 that are more than 50 preserved are cataloged, with two exceptions—one because it preserves a very long section of neck, and the other because it was chemically analyzed by Robert Brill of the Corning Museum of Glass. The rest are listed as fragments grouped by colors. The rim is always a bit thickened and sometimes quite irregular , generally oval rather than circular. The diameters of rims are estimated or approximated because the pieces are so fragmentary or irregular. The necks are cataloged in order of rim diameter, then by color. The pieces cataloged here are mostly of purple glass (33), usually light purple with amber swirls; the amber pieces (24) are usually swirled with purple. Nine are yellow-green (28) and rarely show swirls. Only 9 are blue-green, and 6 are green. These pieces were made mostly with poor-quality glass, and the colors were not well mixed, 66 having swirls, mainly of purple or amber but some yellow-green; only CN 1, 2, 5, and 15 are of fair glass quality.
