Acknowledgments The editors are deeply indebted to the contributors of this volume, for without their participation and sharing of their “epistemic stance” and “internal perspective,” there would be no African American Bioethics: Culture, Race, and Identity. The development of this volume arose through conversations between the editors about the conference and book titled African American Perspectives on Biomedical Ethics held more than fifteen years ago. This led to the development of another conference titled “Symposium on African American Perspectives in Bioethics and Second Annual Conference on Health Disparities,” held on September 23–24, 2004, at Georgetown University . The conference was sponsored by the University of the District of Columbia and the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, Georgetown University; Minority Partnership Program, the Center for Clinical Bioethics, Georgetown University; and the Office of Research on Women’s Health, National Institutes of Health. This conference and the present book would not have been possible without their financial and other support. We want to acknowledge and thank Ms. Marti Patchell, whose administrative support was instrumental to the success of the conference and this book.
