ix I’ve been incredibly fortunate to be able to spend the last fifteen years exploring , studying, and managing prairies. My job with The Nature Conservancy has taken me to grasslands across North America and allowed me to participate in a large network of people who are entranced by and devoted to prairies. This book was made possible by many persons who have mentored me and by lots of colleagues who have intelligently traded ideas back and forth over the years. I am particularly grateful to Steve Winter for introducing me to prairies, Bill Whitney for making me look more closely at them, Al Steuter for helping me understand them, and Brent Lathrop for letting me try out crazy management ideas.
