Spirit and Life: A Journal of Contemporary Franciscanism serves as a vehicle for the publication of papers presented at various conferences, symposia and/or workshops which seek to bring the Franciscan tradition into creative dialogue with contemporary theology, philosophy, spirituality, psychology and history. The Journal is an occasional publication. During the fiftieth anniversary year of The Franciscan Institute, this Journal is a refounding of an earlier Franciscan Institute Series established in 1948 by the Rev. Philotheus Boehner, O.F.M. entitled, Spirit and Life. The four papers contained in this volume were presented at a symposium ecelebrating the anticipated beatification of John Duns Scotus entitled: "The Contemporary Implications of the Thought of John Duns Scotus for Understanding the Nature of the Human Person, Free Will and Decision–Making in the Private and Public Spheres. The symposium was held at The Franciscan Institute, St. Bonaventure University, June 24–28, 1992. The Friars Minor of the Holy Name Province (New York) co-sponsored the symposium and generously provided financial support for the symposium.
