xiii Acknowledgments Adequately extending thanks is tricky business. An error of omission is likely. The research phase of this project has extended over several years, involving a multitude of devoted helpmates; that facet increases the odds for inadvertently forgetting someone, a nonfiction writer’s nightmare. For the friends and collaborators inexcusably overlooked herein, the deepest apology is proffered. The shame is mine to own—evermore. For five years the real workhorse on the Company D project has been Mr. Donaly E. Brice, Texas State Library and Archives Commission , Austin, Texas. Month after grinding month Donaly found, photocopied, and forwarded the primary source documents of Company D, which are the underpinnings of Winchester Warriors. Then, he offered wise counsel when particular questions necessitated clarification . Absent his dedication and doggedness there would be no book—it’s that simple! During long discussions, well ahead of any research work beginning, Donaly enthusiastically saw historical merit in tracking the activities of but one Texas Ranger company, encouraging that such an ambitious task be undertaken. At Austin, he eagerly rolled up his sleeves and went to work: at Maypearl, Texas, a writer’s office was soon overflowing with the gems necessary for recreating Company D’s absorbing story. Inadequate would be the words describing the extent of his expertise or his devotion to excellence . So, the adulation is distilled to plain talk: Donaly, thank you, my friend.
