177 Appendix C Letter Seeking Permission from vRS Provider The Practice and Organization of Sign Language Interpreting Jeremy L. Brunson, M.S., M.A., C.A.S. – Disability Studies, CI and CT This research is conducted as partial requirement for the Ph.D. in sociology at Syracuse University. I am working under the direction of Professor Marjorie DeVault. Below is an overview of the study. This study examines the work of sign language interpreters. As interpreters increase in number and visibility it is important to increase awareness of the work that interpreters do. I will conduct several in-depth interviews with various sign language interpreters, throughout the United States, about their work. I am not collecting confidential information such as clients (deaf and non-deaf) and places of employment. In the event that during interviews confidential information is divulged, all of the identifying information will be changed to pseudonyms. As part of this study, I would like to discuss a variety of settings in which interpreters perform their work (e.g., legal, educational, community , and religious). In the last few years and with the advancement of technologies, video relay services are becoming a prominent part of the work of interpreters. As such, I would like to include a discussion about this venue of interpreting. To do this, I would like permission to ask your staff: scheduler(s), manager(s), and director(s) at the Scottsdale, Arizona, site to allow me to interview them. I would also like permission to observe them working to better understand the role they play in your organization. Information that is considered proprietary such as call volume numbers will not be part of the study. Additionally, in accordance with the code of ethics endorsed by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, I will not observe interpreters processing calls.
