APPENDIX B Regulation of Family Day Care: Additional Information The following summarizes the Vermont standards for registered family day care homes in 1986.1 This list is not complete. It does, however, indicate the major categories of standards and the most significant issues in these categories. STAFF There shall be at least one caregiver with children at all times. Caregiver shall be at least eighteen years of age and able to read and carry out the Family Day Care Home Registration Standards. Caregiver shall not use or be under the effects of alcohol and/or drugs during the hours of care except medication prescribed by a physician .. . . PROGRAM Care provided shall be reliable and consistent and shall include quiet and active play with indoor and outdoor activities.... Television viewing shall not be the major part of a child's daily activity. The home shall provide care to not more than ten children present at anyone time. Of these children present at anyone time, not more than six shall be preschool children. The home may not care for more than two children per caregiver, at any one time, who cannot quickly exit the home without assistance. RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN REGISTRANT AND DEPARTMENT Upon request, a registrant shall provide the department with a list of all the names and addresses of families served during the prior twelve months and the dates of service. HEALTH AND SAFETY A child who is ill or has a contagious condition may only be cared for in a family day care horne when, in the opinion of the registrant and the parent(s) the child may be appropriately cared for, and there are not other children from other families present or when the degree of illness or contagious condition will not, in the opinion of the registrant, adversely affect the health of other children from other families in care.
