112 A LOVE of the Jewish people A DESIRE to perpetuate the memory of the Holocaust A VISION of people celebrating life while remembering loss AN UNDERSTANDING that Torah is continually being written These values are what brought Sherman Jacobson to CLAL. He wanted to publish a book of stories from the Holocaust that could be read each Shabbat and on holidays so that as we celebrate life today, we would remember yesterday. CLAL, which helped Americans begin to face and address the Holocaust in the 1970s, was instrumental in the creation of the United States Holocaust Memorial Council and Museum. Now, thirty years later, thanks to the vision, determination, and tireless energy of Sherman Jacobson, and the generous support of a large group of caring and concerned donors, we at CLAL are proud to bring this important new work to the American Jewish community. We are deeply appreciative of the generosity, support, and assistance of the USC Shoah Foundation Institute for Visual History and Education, University of Southern California, which made its vast archives of interviews with survivors of the Holocaust available to us for this special project.
