214 Part One Document 46 Certification of Documents Showing the Services of Maestre de Campo Don Juan Domínguez de Mendoza El Paso, October 3, 16841 The cabildo justicia y regimiento of the Villa of Santa Fe, capital of the provinces of New Mexico, residents in El Paso del Río del Norte, etc.2 We certify and attest to the king, our lord, God keep him many years, and to his royal Council of the Indies, and to the viceroys of New Spain and other ministers of His Majesty who may see this, that we know the Maestre de Campo don Juan Domínguez y Mendoza,3 citizen of these provinces, and that he has served His Majesty in them at his own cost and expense since the year of 1640,4 when he entered this kingdom to serve His Majesty, and has continued to do so up to the present year of 1684. The aforesaid is the legitimate son of General don Bartolomé [sic] Domínguez who was among the first conquerors of this kingdom, and the said son, in conjunction with his said father, has brought twelve families to this said kingdom at his own cost and expense, important service which he has done His Majesty as is shown by his titles and certifications from thirteen generals who have governed this said kingdom , which he has presented before this cabildo in order that they might be reviewed and registered by it for their greater validation.5 They are as follows: A title of alférez real of the kingdom in active war, issued by General Alonso Pacheco when he was governor and captain general, signed by his name and sealed with the seal of his arms, countersigned by his secretary of war and government.6 Also an appointment as captain of infantry for the defense of the royal standard and service of His Majesty, signed by General don Fernando de Argüello and sealed with the seal of his arms, and countersigned by his secretary of war and government.7 Also, a title of captain and commander in active war, issued by General don Luis de Guzmán when he was governor and captain general, signed by his name and sealed with the seal of his arms, and countersigned by his secretary of war and government.8 Also, a title of lieutenant general of the kingdom, issued by General Hernando de Ugarte y la Concha when he was governor,9 and a Military Service Records 215 certification [issued] after he ceased to be governor,10 signed by his name and sealed with the seal of his arms, the title being countersigned by his secretary of war and government.
