This book would not have been possible without my Bermuda friends and colleagues, especially the late Archie Hallett, whose work on early Bermuda formed the basis for my own and whose friendship encouraged me until his death in 2003. Archie’s wife, Clara (Keggie), a scholar in her own right, shared her expertise and her hospitality. Others whose aid was invaluable were Edward C. Harris, director of the Bermuda Maritime Museum (now the National Museum of Bermuda); John Adams and Karla Hayward at the Bermuda Archives; and the staffs of the Archives and the Bermuda Library.
