Abstract

Universities need to take a leadership role to prepare students how to live and work in this era of global climate change. A university's operations can have a positive or negative impact on a student, shaping their knowledge, skills and values. Seattle University's sustainable operations practices will be highlighted as examples that can be replicated at other universities. Practices covered include: an Environmental Advisory Council, a Sustainability Challenge, pesticide-free grounds, green building policy and food waste composting. For this chapter, sustainability is used as a framework for making decisions that address human, environmental and economic issues systemically.
