Santayana’s mature ontology is discussed, especially his “realm of essence” and “realm of spirit.” These “realms” have a non-existential status for him, yet are very real for living the life of aesthetic fulfilment. I contrast his views with Dewey’s more embodied concept of ideas and aesthetic experience.
