Asachildandyoungman,Juleswasarelativelyconscientiousstudent. Althoughfarfromthetopofhisclass,heapparentlydidwinawardsfor meritoriousperformanceingeography,music,andGreekandLatin,and heeasilypassedhisbaccalauréatin.Buthistruepassionwasthesea. TheshipyarddocksofnearbyÎleFeydeauandthebustlingcommerceof theNantesharborneverfailedtosparkJules’syouthfulimaginationwith visionsoffar-offlandsandexoticpeoples.Legendhasitthatheonceran offtoseaasacabinboyaboardaschoonerboundfortheIndies,buthis fathermanagedtointercepttheshipbeforeitreachedtheopenseaandto retrievehiswaywardson.Accordingtothisstory,Jules(probablyafter agoodthrashing)promisedhisparentsthathewouldtravelhenceforth onlyinhisdreams.Althoughthischarmingtalewasmostlikelyinvented byVerne’sfamilialbiographer,MargueriteAllottedelaFuÿe,itnevertheless exemplifiestheauthor’slifelonglovefortheseaandhisyearningsfor adventure-filledjourneystodistantportsofcall. YoungJulesalsolovedmachines.Duringaninterviewtowardtheend ofhislife,hereminiscedabouthisearlyformativeyears:“WhileIwas quitealad,Iusedtoadorewatchingmachinesatwork.Myfatherhada country-houseatChantenay,atthemouthoftheLoire,andnearthegovernment factoryatIndret.IneverwenttoChantenaywithoutenteringthe factoryandstandingforhourswatchingthemachines....Thispenchant hasremainedwithmeallmylife,andtodayIhavestillasmuchpleasure inwatchingasteam-engineorafinelocomotiveatworkasIhaveincontemplating apicturebyRaphaelorCorregio”(qtd.inRobertH.Sherard, “JulesVerneatHome,”McClure’sMagazine[Jan.]:).
