| 58 The Clay Jars The potter shaped two breasts on each flesh colored jar, the round objects resembling short women with no heads, two breasts on each jar. Set in a group, they are headless mothers begging the world to quit taking their sons. Seven of them have short arms extended to the sky. The other two are different. One is set on its arms, its legs in the air, like a woman standing on her hands. There is no head, stunted arms supporting the pot as if she is completing a cartwheel. Why does she seem so happy with no head, while the others weep for their sons? The ninth pot is a headless, breasted woman bending over on her knees, the hole in back showing what looks like the handle to the broom she uses to sweep the floor. This is not a violation because all nine pots have broomsticks sticking out of each, breasts proud and defiant as something seeps out, women radiating moisture from within, bringing tears, perhaps milk, to overflowing at the top. ...
