٤٨٥ 485 49: His Scrupulosity Al-Khallāl heard Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad ibn Maʿbad report: [Ibn Maʿbad:] I saw Abū ʿAbd Allāh wearing yellow sandals. We were informed by Ibn Nāṣir, who cites Abū l-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAbd al-Jabbār, who cites Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī l-Khayyāṭ, who cites Muḥammad ibn Abī l-Fawāris, who cites Aḥmad ibn Jaʿfar ibn Salm, who cites Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Khāliq, who heard Abū Bakr al-Marrūdhī report: [Al-Marrūdhī:] I once brought Aḥmad a new pair of leather shoes that had been made for him. He kept them overnight, but in the morning he said: “I’ve been thinking about those shoes”—he may even have said “most of the night”—“and couldn’t sleep, so I’ve decided not to wear them. How much time do I have left, anyway? More than half my life is over.” Taking a battered old pair of shoes he had, he said, “Here, slap some patches onto these.” He added, “Do you know how long I’ve had these? More than sixteen years, and they were used when I got them. These here”— meaning the new ones—“were weighing on my mind.” I read aloud to ʿAlī ibn Nāṣir his report citing Abī l-Qāsim ibn al-Busrī citing Ibn Baṭṭah, who cites Abū Ṭālib ibn al-Buhlūl, who heard Aḥmad ibn Aṣram al-Muzanī report: [Al-Muzanī:] I once noticed that Aḥmad wore trousers that ended above the ankle. We cite Muḥammad ibn Abī Manṣūr, who was informed by Abū l-Qāsim ibn al-Busrī, citing Abū ʿAbd Allāh ibn Baṭṭah, who cites Abū Bakr al-Ājurrī, who cites Abū Naṣr ibn Kurdī, who cites Abū Bakr al-Marrūdhī, who said: [Al-Marrūdhī:] I saw Aḥmad wearing a murabbaʿ354 outer garment. He often put the end of it under his feet when he prayed.
