ABOUT THE AUTHORS MARY ANN MASON is Professor of the Graduate School and Faculty Codirector of the Berkeley Law Center on Law and Social Policy, the University of California , Berkeley. From 2000 to 2007, she served as the first woman dean of the Graduate Division at UC Berkeley, with responsibility for nearly ten thousand students. During her tenure, she championed diversity in the graduate student population, promoted equity for student parents, and pioneered measures to enhance the career-life balance for all faculty. Her most recent book is Mothers on the Fast Track: How a New Generation Can Balance Family and Careers (Oxford University Press, 2007). NICHOLAS H. WOLFINGER is Associate Professor in the Department of Family and Consumer Studies and Adjunct Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Utah. He is the author of Understanding the Divorce Cycle (Cambridge University Press, 2005) and the coeditor of Fragile Families and the Marriage Agenda (Springer, 2005). MARC GOULDEN studies the life course of academics at the University of California , Berkeley. His research projects include Do Babies Matter and the UC Faculty Family Friendly Edge.
