Preface xiii Acknowledgments The editors are indebted to the many participants in and contributors to this project. Some have been mentioned already in the Preface, but others deserve special note. Among those who labored consistently to generate the work of the Coalition for Children were Professor Raymond Ducharme and the two principal student leaders in the Coalition, Jane Palmer and Susan Bentsi-Enchill. The book itself would not have come to fruition without the help of the Kahn Institute and its director, Marjorie Senechal, at every step on the way. The editors remain as Senior Fellows of the Institute. The writers have given generously of their time and talent over a period of nearly two years. Six of them (Etheredge, Hearst, Allen, Singer, and the editors) served as Kahn Fellows during the original year of study; and three others (James, Matthews, and Woodhouse) were members of the Advisory Committee.
