Appendix: Public Aquaria in the United States Following is a list, alphabetical by state, of many of the public aquaria in the United States. They all have Web sites with additional information. Alabama The Estuarium at Dauphin Island. It has exhibits of the Mobile-Tensaw River Delta wetlands as well as the Mobile Bay estuary. California Birch Aquarium at Scripps, La Jolla. Focused on science education , it has two seawater-equipped classrooms next to public display areas. Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific. One of the largest in the United States, its exhibits take visitors throughout the Pacific Ocean’s three regions : Southern California/Baja, the Tropical Pacific, and the Northern Pacific. Monterey Bay Aquarium. Exhibits re-create Monterey Bay’s habitats, from shallow tide pools to the deep sea. It is one of the best aquaria in the nation. The Web site offers webcams, photo galleries, and a wealth of information. There is a top-notch research facility that has developed techniques of culturing marine animals such as jellyfish, which now are exhibited in many other aquaria. Sea World, San Diego. You can travel through a submerged viewing tube, a pipeline to the center of the shark’s world, one of the largest displays of sharks. This re-creates habitats of the Colorado River as it flows to the Sea of Cortez and of Indonesia’s Kampar River along its journey to the South China Sea. Connecticut Maritime Aquarium, Norwalk. Devoted to the Long Island Sound, it features over one thousand animals native to the Sound and its watershed and has an IMAX theater. Mystic Aquarium and Institute for Exploration, Mystic. In addition to the many exhibits, it has educational programs for different ages. District of Columbia Smithsonian National Zoological Park. It has a variety of exhibits, including an Amazonian fish display. Florida Florida Aquarium, Tampa Bay. It focuses on Florida as it follows a drop of water from its underground source to the open sea. Exhibits feature thousands of native plants and animals as well as presentations from around the world. Sea World, Orlando. It has exhibits where you can feed the dolphins. The site sports an interactive map so you can check out the exhibits before you visit. Hawaii Waikiki Aquarium. The third oldest public aquarium in the United States, it is a small aquarium with over three hundred species of aquatic animals and plants, including endangered and threatened species.
