A c k n o w l e d g m e n t s The essays in this volume are the fruits of research, seminars, and casual discussions over lunch or in a hallway at the University of Pennsylvania’s Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies. The volume’s contributors all participated in the 2006–7 research group “Jews, Christians, and Muslims Under Caliphs and Sultans .” On behalf of all the members of this research group, we extend our gratitude to the staff and supporters of the Center for fostering an especially conducive atmosphere for scholarship and collegiality. The process of transforming a year’s worth of research into a coherent volume is one that involves considerable effort and collaboration.
