xi The main body of this book follows a modified Library of Congress transliteration system. To make the text more readable for a general audience, I use the common anglicized versions of Russian names and surnames in the body of the work: Fyodor Dostoevsky rather than Fedor Dostoevskii, Leo Tolstoy rather than Lev Tolstoii, Alexander rather than Aleksandr, Alyosha rather than Alesha, and Mitya rather than Mitia. In the notes and bibliography I use the standard Library of Congress transliteration system. References to Dostoevsky’s works appear in parentheses in the main text and refer to the volume and page number of the Academy Edition of the Complete Works of Dostoevsky: F. M.
