Mary 'fracy Earle (1864-1955) was born and raised in rural Cobden, Illinois, the daughter of the horticulturist and inventor Parker Earle. She received a bachelor of science degree from the University of Illinois in 1885 and subsequently spent several years in the South before moving to New York City.
