APPENDIX E Roy Rogers's Discography THE SONS OF THE PIONEERS PERIOD, 1934-1937 STANDARD RADIO TRANSCRIPTIONS, 1934-1935 Between 1934 and 1936 The Sons of the Pioneers recorded nearly 280 songs for Standard Radio Transcriptions. These recordings demonstrate a remarkable and energetic effort and provide an enduring record of one of America's most significant CountryWestern singing groups. Nearly every recording reveals the individual and collective talents of the Pioneers. Their close harmony and trio yodeling, Bob Nolan and Tim Spencer's skill in composing lyrics, Roy Rogers's yodeling, and the musicianship of the Farr brothers come rogether in an incredible way. The transcriptions, marketed to radio stations across the country, gave the Pioneers national attention and established them as a model that other western singing groups sought to emulate. The musical selections on the transcriptions included numerous traditional favorites with an emphasis on spirituals and southern tunes, most of which are in the public domain. The Sons of the Pioneers recorded at least eighteen Stephen Foster tunes, many spirituals, and a number of other traditional and popular tunes. More important are the compositions ofThe Sons of the Pioneers. The transcriptions include twenty-seven Bob Nolan songs, ten Tim Spencer tunes, three Leonard Slye (Roy Rogers) numbers, ten Hugh Farr pieces, and three Karl Farr compositions. Bob Nolan and Tim Spencer collaborated on two tunes and the Farr brothers on another five. Many of the transcriptions have been reissued on commercial recordings. These reissues are marked in the discography with specific symbols that follow the song titles. The titles marked with an asterisk (*) were reissued on The Legendary Sons o/the Pioneers, Vol. 5, Cattle Records, LP-55 and The Sons 0/the Pioneers, The Standard Radio Transcriptions , 1934/1935, Vol. 1, Outlaw Records, CSR-5 and Cassette CSRC-5. Those designated with two asterisks (**) were reissued on Vol. 6, Cattle Records, LP-56 and Vol. 2 of Outlaw Records, CSR-6 and Cassette CSRC-6. Cattle Records is a German label. The titles marked with three asterisks (***) were reissued on The Original Pioneer Trio-Sings Songs o/the Hills and Plains, AFM-731. Those marked with four (****) were reissued on The Days o/the Yodeling Cowboys, Vol. 2, The Sons o/the Pioneers, Cowgirlboy 230 Copyrighted Material Roy Rogers's Discography 231 Records, LP5002. In 1998 the Bear Family Records issued a five-CD set, The Sons o/the Pioneers: Songs o/the Prairie, The Standard Transcriptions, Part 1, 1934-1935, BCD 15710 EI and in 1999 a four-CD collection, The Sons o/the Pioneers: Memories o/the Range, The Standard Transcriptions, Part 2, 1935-1936, BCD 16104 01. These two sets include 272 songs from the Standard Transcriptions and comprise the most complete reissues of the Standard Transcriptions ro date. Larry Zwisohn, the leading authority on Roy Rogers recordings, provided the liner notes and a comprehensive discography. Zwisohn designates the session dates for the first 150 transcriptions as August and September 1934 and April and September 1935. The recording sessions for the songs included in Part 2 occurred in May, April, and June of 1935 and January of 1936. The songs included in Part 1 of the Bear Family reissue are designated with two plus signs (++) and those included in part 2 are indicated with three (+++). I used this discography and that of Ken Griffis in Hear My Song: The Story 0/the Celebrated Sons 0/the Pioneers (1977) to compile and check this discography. I am indebted to Larry Zwisohn for reviewing the entire Roy Rogers discography in its initial stages. I must say, however, that the work is mine and that I am responsible for any errors.
