Author’s Acknowledgments This book would not have been possible without the encouragement and collaboration of my friends in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and in Belgium. Hamuli Kabarhuza of the National Council of Development NGOs of the Democratic Republic of the Congo was the first to suggest that I write down the story of my experiences. When I arrived in Belgium in 1998, I was welcomed by Marie Goretti Nyirarukundo and Ivan Godfroid of Vredeseilanden-Coopibo, a Belgian NGO based in Leuven. Thanks to their help and encouragement, the idea of writing a book began to take shape. The realization of this project was made possible by VredeseilandenCoopibo , which put its resources at my disposal. Their personnel unfailingly provided me with the necessary help. They also made the translation of my book into Dutch possible (2001). Later, they put me in contact with the Fundació S’Olivar in Estellencs, Mallorca. Through their efforts , the book was published both in Catalan and Spanish (2002). Juan Carrero Saralegui, president of the Fundació S’Olivar and spokesperson for the Spanish Forum for Justice in Rwanda, understood that it was important for me, and for all those whose names appear in this book, that the book be published in English. The Fundació S’Olivar provided the funding to help me accomplish this dream and entrusted the translation to Julia Emerson. Her devotion, her attention to detail, and her perfect combination of professionalism and passion have been very moving to me. Finally, I would like to express my appreciation to the University of Wisconsin Press. Their commitment to the publication of the English translation comes not only from academic interest.
