acknowledgments W hile I was working on the first draft of my manuscript, I knew I had a story. The information collected by my mother proved most important. The stories she shared with me of the Sin-Aikst/Lakes, and our family were invaluable. I learned, however, while working on the manuscript, that I did not know how to write. My friend Therese Kennedy Johns came to my aid. She taught me how to operate a computer and o¤ered advice on restructuring the manuscript so that everything fell into place. When material did not relate well to the story, she suggested whether to delete or change it. She helped with the wording. Therese bolstered my courage and restored my confidence more than once. I sent a copy of the manuscript to the Washington State University Press in Pullman. Keith Petersen, the editor, reviewed it and advised that I had achieved my goal in writing a memoir. He added that more work was needed to create a book. He recommended well-written autobiographies that inspired me to learn to write. Joan LaFrance, a longtime friend of our family, shared important thoughts with me. She unraveled the mysteries of writing. Because of her, the manuscript became complete and took the form I was seeking. xvii After much work, I showed the manuscript to Ron Chew, the director of the Wing Luke Asian Museum in Seattle. Ron called me a month later and said, to my pleasure, that he liked the manuscript. He asked if he could present it to the University of Washington Press in Seattle. He wanted Naomi Pascal, the editor in chief, to review it.
